A Trainer / Agent

The majority of owners find their horse with the assistance of their trainer. Many trainers have horses available for purchase or lease within their care. Alternatively, owners may choose to hire a bloodstock agent to source a horse on their behalf.

Claiming Races

Claiming races provide an opportunity to purchase horses directly after the race at a fixed, advertised price. All horses competing in the race are available for purchase once the race is completed, and the advertised price cannot be exceeded. These horses come with proven form, giving owners valuable information to make an informed decision, and offer a ready-to-run option for new owners. Leasing

Leasing offers an opportunity for owners to experience the excitement of racehorse ownership without the upfront cost of purchasing a horse. A lease agreement is made between the two parties, with the lessor (the horse owner) and the lessee (the person who will race the horse) setting out the terms and conditions. Public Auction Sales

In Ireland, auction houses like Goffs and Tattersalls hold public sales throughout the year, offering opportunities to purchase horses. These sales are open to everyone, and it’s a great idea to attend, even as a spectator, to observe how the process works. Going with an experienced bloodstock agent or trainer can make the experience even more valuable, providing expert insight into the sale.
